Day 68: The Scientific Revolution – Part 1 – Ptolemy And The Catholic Church.

The Universe has been wrought for us by a supremely good and orderly Creator. (Nicolaus Copernicus)

Thinking about the musings from Day 67: The Scientific Revolution – Part 1.

I would submit to you that although Ptolemy’s Geocentric Model of the universe on the surface appears to make logistical sense, one must remember that there is an inherent flaw with his model. I would submit to you that it is this flaw is not so easy to detect if you do not know what to look for…

And ultimately this flaw will overturn over 1,500 years of teaching…

And change the way we view the universe, and all other branches of science, forever.

If you have already read: Day 67: The Scientific Revolution – Part 1., then you are already familiar with the basic facts regarding the Geocentric Model of the universe presented by Ptolemy. The logical conclusions that Ptolemy came to were pretty clear:

Part A – Ptolemy stands in the same location, at the same time, in the same place, and thus he does not move;

Part B – Ptolemy looks up and sees stars, planets, and the moon all around him, and they are all moving throughout the sky over time;

Part C – Ptolemy concludes that the Earth does not move because he is standing still, while everything up above him in the sky is moving over time.

(Aristotle would have come to the exact, same conclusions as well if he were alive to read Ptolemy’s conclusions: DAY 11: There Has To Be A Way To Make It All Make Sense…Right?)

There is a case to be made however, that as far as the Catholic Church is concerned, they still would have endorsed the idea of a Earth centered universe even without the Geocentric Model.

So why did the Catholic Church endorse the Geocentric Model brought forth by Ptolemy?

Consider the evidence presented in the book of Genesis.

Notice the one word that I have italics that is consistent throughout the verses from Genesis:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters…10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called the Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good…15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so…17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,…20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven…22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.  (Genesis 1:1-2, 10-12, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24-31 KJV)

So what is the most logical conclusion one can come to after reading these verses?

God spent the first 6 days creating the universe focusing his time specifically on…

Earth.

How do we know this?

Earth is mentioned 21 times in 17 verses relating to the first 6 days of the creation of the universe in Genesis.

(Please feel free to re-read those verses again and see if I missed an Earth or two. I would imagine that it would be pretty difficult to miss something as big as our Earth, but I suppose it is possible….)

So, if God spent the first 6 days with his entire focus on Earth, doesn’t it make logistical and scientific sense, that we are in fact living in a geocentric, Earth centered, universe?

The science of Ptolemy and the Catholic Church seems to lean in that direction.

But…what if Ptolemy and the Catholic Church are both wrong?

That will be covered next time.

Do not feel discouraged if you are still trying to figure out Ptolemy’s Geocentric Model of the universe. Do not feel discouraged if you are still trying to understand the relationship between the Geocentric Model and the Catholic Church.  Instead, embrace the idea that as you continue to gather scientific facts, as you learn more, the more solid the foundation you are creating for yourself not only for the creation of the universe, but many more things than that.

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  (Colossians 1:16 KJV)

Was today’s blog a little confusing at times? Was the content perhaps a little overwhelming? Did you feel lost not understanding some or most of the subject matter?

Those feelings are totally understandable and it is ok to have one or more of those feelings. Remember that you are reading Day 68: The Scientific Revolution – Part 1 – (Part 2).

If you haven’t been in class since the first day of school…or when the project began…or when the contract was first signed, etc., these feelings make perfect and logistical sense.

Please feel free to go back to where all of this began:
